For a few weeks the boys performed as Part Three and steadily increased their repertoire of songs. They developed a harmony style which covered a wide range of material from Folk Music to Ballads and Country and Western to Rock and Roll, but still they only appeared in a few bars in Glasgow.
Their performances with Sally in Karen and The Sofisticats were becoming less challenging because they did not use harmonies with much of the material. On the other hand, in Part Three they were limited to male vocal songs. The obvious solution was to ask Sally to join them on the pub circuit where they could develop a wider variety of songs and harmonise. Sally agreed to join them, and they immediately changed their name to Part Four.
Soon it was time for the original Karen to come back and Sally would have to leave for America. By this time, it was obvious that the vocal sound was becoming very distinctive and the boys were unwilling to let Sally go. After a few weeks they decided to leave Karen and the Sofisticats and Sally changed her mind about going to America. So began Part Four, which now had a sufficiently good repertoire, to perform at dances and private parties.
It took quite a few months, but gradually, Part Four gained a reputation for providing the right programme, which included covering current chart material, for Supper Dances, which was the trend at hotels in Scotland. Soon, they attracted the attention of a local agent who met them and suggested that they became a 'theme' band. The idea was to concentrate the image of the band on one style of music and use that image to promote it. Since they played half a dozen or so Latin American songs, they decided to appear in South American gear.
